Deacon Joseph Nhat Tran was born on May 1952 in Nam Dinh, Vietnam. His father was a tailor especially for “áo dài” (the Vietnamese traditional long dress) since they were in North Vietnam. After 1954, his family moved to the south and resided in Saigon until April 30th, 1975 – the critical moment that Vietnam was no longer free but under the Communist regime and that is when his family migrated to America. While residing in Chicago, he obtained an Associates degree in Electronics from DeVry and moved to Houston for better weather and for work in the electronics field. He married Phyllis Nguyen in 1986. They have raised five children. He has been a parishioner of St. Justin Martyr Parish since 1994 and has helped Fr. John Tran to create the Vietnamese Catholic Community at St. Justin Martyr Parish since May 1995. With the encouragement of Fr. John Keller he went under the Diaconate program of the Archdiocese and was ordained a Deacon in 2003. He is active in the community mainly for the Vietnamese programs such as Bible Class and the Legion of Mary.
